Georgia Tech Vs Georgia - an old rivalry

Separated by Interstate 70 miles between Atlanta and Athens, Georgia created, 100 years apart, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and the University of Georgia (UGA) have since 1893 in competition with more than football. Competing for everything in the State of Georgia, potential students and fans on government grants and academic recognition (Georgia Tech, a university, technical research while UGA is a liberal arts college). AlthoughIt is based on the rust that characterized the rivalry.

That should not mean that these schools have for each other probably started just after the Civil War, when it was decided that a new engineering school to be established. UGA President Dan Patrick Mell, the legislature tried to convince the new school should be located on the campus of Georgia in Athens. Despite his efforts at the Georgia Institute of Technology, near the city limits of Atlanta, founded in 1885.

It did nottoo long for the first begin hostilities just a few years later, in 1891 by, of all things, the school colors. UGA-school magazine declared the school colors gold, black and purple. Georgia football coach felt that gold was cowardice Symboled felt too close to yellow, where he was. That same year, however, the Tech students voted in white and gold as the official school colors. In its first football game against Auburn, Tech would use soccer goldUniforms, felt like a slap in the face of much of Georgia. Two years later, after defeating Georgia Tech in their first football game was always golden colors of the Georgian away from school.

That fateful first game in Athens on 4 November 1893 with Georgia Tech, then known as blacksmiths, won with a score of 28-6. But it was these four touchdowns that rivalry activated. Leonard Wood was a 33-year-old physician, was the U.S. Army officially registered as a GeorgiaTech student a few days before the match. However, a full-time student is eligible to play he was. This fact angry fans since Georgia during and after the game, they threw stones at a disadvantage to all players, Tech. Next day an article in the Atlanta Journal, a sports journalist in Athens, ridiculed, that Tech football team was nothing more than a collection of Atlanta in a couple of students threw residents in.

A rivalry was born.

For the next few years, GeorgiaTech football program was very badly cut. As a result, she decided to give new coach of another school rivals Clemson rent. In 1904, John Heisman paid $% of admissions and 30 to coach his 2250 Georgia Tech football and baseball. (NOTE: After retiring from coaching football in 1927, he was by the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan in 1935. His death in 1936, Club Trophy for best college football player, after renaming theHeisman Trophy). Heisman Tech football program will immediately switched to 8-1-1 in the first year. 1908 Georgia Tech alumni and recruiting tactics were studied, performed by the SIAA (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association). The accusations were not proven and the SIAA later decided in favor of Tech. In his 16 seasons at Georgia Tech, led the Golden Tornado Heisman (such as Tech was known), unbeaten for three seasons, including a 32-game winning streak and allimportant 23-6 victory over Georgia. Heisman led Tech to the highest scoring football game ever played with a 222-0 victory in 1916 a completely outmanned Cumberland State (Georgia was not too bad!).

In 1917, with the beginning of World War I, UGA students broke the football program because of its location, many bodies were recruited for the war. Since Atlanta was a military training area at the time, kept his male students, and Tech put the football programThroughout the war. UGA program again as his football career in 1919, she announced proudly, "UGA Argonne" and "Tech in Atlanta" in narcotics. As a result stopped all sporting links with UGA Tech, including some home games in Atlanta, Georgia Cancelling Grant's Field (UGA commonly used Grant Field as their own territory). It was not until 1925, will by mutual consent, the regular season competition to continue.

In 1932, Georgia and Georgia Tech would become of two of theoriginal 13 members of the SEC, UGA which is still a member. However, Tech was the SEC to leave in 1964 after coach Bobby Dodd began a feud with, Alabama, Bear Bryant (the result of a dirty trick from one of Alabama player who ended the career of a technical player, and Bryant's refusal to discipline the athlete). There were also concerns the fair allocation of dubious recruiting tactics and student athletes treatment, the SEC led to the departure of the Tech. However, Dodd hasthe importance of the rivalry and would Yellowjackets to eight consecutive victories (1946-1954) to lead and score more points than Georgia 176-39 in those games. This is and remains the longest winning streak in the rivalry of the two teams.

A few years later, Tech would try again in the SEC, but her application was rejected, mainly because of the opposition in Georgia. With no competition in the league, you would have the Metro Tech Conference for all sports except football the peer. SimilarNotre Dame, Tech would be to compete as an independent for the next 15 years, until joining the ACC in 1979, the Conference, where it closed today.

Not satisfied with simply dislike each other on the field, soccer field, two institutions have also cut their rivalry on the Fight Song. Tech Ramblin Wreck song includes the line "To hell with Georgia" and "with the white and gold" is the text of "Down followed with the Red and Black" and laterto "Drop the Battle Axe to the head of Georgia". The Georgia Fight Song, "Glory Glory", which technically has remained since the first was published in 1909, is officially changed in Georgia. The student body, however the closing lyrics to "and to hell with Georgia Tech last!"
