Prejudice
We all seem prejudices about people, places and things about the information we have, or are often exposed to the perspective of those in our immediate environment is based. In youth football can, I can not count how often I am pleasantly surprised by the game and the actions of the team and coaches. Very often, the reputation of the Pee Wee team and coach was a product of others, only the aggregate and frustrationDesirability of other youth coaches, nothing more than sour grapes. Unfortunately, the world of youth soccer coaching, these perceptions and attitudes are pervasive, widespread and often false.
Be open minded
When coaching Pee Wee football, I try in these situations with an open mind and a soft heart and let the other team and coaches at me wrong. One of the most unpopular and misunderstood coach in two different leagues my teamsactually in competition with a trusted friend and confidant. His organization is the way to the treatment well for us and in return we went on our way to go do the same for them. Now our company has a strong rivalry, but respectful, and we look forward to each other every year for the right reasons. Would we feel the same way when we heard the others, and came into the game with a foot in the water? Probably not.
Big mistake
Unfortunately Ito succumb to that decisions about people who are, I know little about, and in many cases, these decisions are wrong 100%. I had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Rick Neuheisel at UCLA last weekend in the clinic in the Champions
Reno, Nevada. Coach Neuheisel was a very sharp display on his version of the 2 minutes as UCLA offense and will be drilling this autumn. I knew the coach from his time at Colorado, his buffalo were always a big game, when my beloved Cornhusker to histheir schedule. Of course Coach Neuheisel unorthodox West Coast "Outward Bound" position was the opposite of Nebraska, no objections nonsense, blue collar, physical ground attack posture. Coach was not very popular man in the area, the West Coast persona persona Surfertyp attack is over, etc. Then there was the controversy at Washington University in an NCAA Tournament Hoops, Pool, more bad publicity. For some reason, but nobody around here knew, the man he was like "Skippy" knownand the usually polite Nebraska fans seemed ridiculous, as this man in the newspaper, talking on the radio and in daily conversation fan.
Although not too far from spending a few hours with someone, you can something like a feeling for that person to share my opinion. Coach Neuheisel began his presentation with some background, he did not talk about his collegiate coaching record of 66-30 his championships, he spoke of some humiliating moments he had as a player and we wantmay be related to our teams and children. I did not went to coach at UCLA as a very undersized quarterback, the specific number 24X as a freshman. X meant you double a number, and probably never get in a game. Nr. 24 by the way this year, Freeman McNeil, so clear that they do not believe Coach N wanted to get on the field. In those days, not redshirt freshman at UCLA. Fortunately for coach, has one of the other freshman homesickness, and closes coachgot this player number N # 20 Coach does not stop the game that year, in fact, another child so late that coach S is known as the original name # 20, not his own, as the game was already printed.
UCLA and Coach Neueheisel
As the season progressed, the UCLA a very poor season and the coach tried to spark on special teams. The coach offered the chance to play for anyone who voluntarily special teams. Coach N voluntarilyto play to his surprise, the UCLA coach sent him back to the Kick-team, where his work was a trap block type L4. In just over 195 kg was a coach for other teams, the Linebackers 230-250 running at full speed with malice in their hearts weighed on their kick coverage teams to block. Coach had broken a number of very devaluation own stories too, which he said was beaten unconscious and his face mask during one of those revenues. He said no one wayspecify, however, learn and make it a little fun at himself. A quarterback playing special teams as a designated blocker, which impressed me. He has never said his win at UCLA Rose Bowl or Rose Bowl MVP award, so nothing.
In the post-conference mixer into the speaker Suite Coach Neuheisel could not otherwise than what I thought. He was shy, friendly, not at all outgoing, friendly, humble and very willing to help and guidance to ensure that all invited, even at a low offer Pee WeeSoccer Coach like me. He went out of their way to support and appreciation for the offer was not a youth coach for the game of football. He saw her in the eye, a firm handshake questions and listened carefully to what you say, big questions and asked for clarification on the road. I came from that experience with a much different opinion of Coach Neuheisel. He had absolutely nothing to time youth coach from Nebraska, none of my children to getrecruited by UCLA and I'm certainly not a donor prospects for UCLA.
Lesson Learned
On my way back to my room, I felt a little ashamed of someone, judge the wrong way, without the benefit of more information or a personal experience. I hope I've learned my lesson, because I expect so often so wrong, and it is not congruent with how I want my children or players act. I had the same experience with the high school coach Steve Caland from Pennsylvania, I was200% wrong about him as well and now we are good friends. My opinion changed after meeting him at last in a coaches clinic in Pennsylvannia in 2002. The moral of the story, make your own decisions about people, including players, coaches and parents youth football. Keep an open mind, and it may surprise you.
I'm at the other end of these situations have been me. I can not count how many guys have me come to a clinic and told me that while they have enjoyedHearing me speak, otherwise I lot) (in the white way than they had expected. I'm not winning at all costs, Pee Wee football coach in any way shape or form. Our starting point is: you can win a lot of fun playing children , which are great sports and great learning fundamentals, they are not mutually exclusive goals.
